Feeling lonely? New research suggests you might want to find out that answer. Not only is loneliness an unpleasant condition, it can also harm the body’s immune system.
The new study shows that people who are lonely experience more reactivation(重新激活) of hidden viruses in their systems than the well-connected ones. Lonely people also are more likely than others to produce inflammatory compounds(炎性化合物) in response to stress, which may cause heart disease and other chronic disorders. “Both, in different ways, indicate that the immune system is out of whack,” said study researcher Lisa Jaremka.
Jaremka and her colleagues studied 200 female breast cancer survivors and 134 overweight, middle-aged adults with no major health problems.
In the first study, the researchers analyzed the blood of the breast cancer survivors for antibodies against viruses. These common viruses can remain inactive and symptomless inside the body. Higher antibody levels indicate higher levels of activated viruses. The results showed that the lonelier the participant, the higher the levels of virus antibodies in the blood. Jaremka said, “The immune system is unable at that time, for whatever reason, in this case loneliness perhaps, to keep that virus under control.
In the second study, the researchers measured cytokines(炎性因子) in 144 of the breast cancer survivors as well as the healthy thought overweight middle-aged adults. The participants gave a blood sample and then experienced the stress of having to give a speech and do mental math in front of people in white lab coats.
After the stressful speech, the lonelier the person is, the higher the levels of cytokine interleuking-6 are. This cytokine is important for healing in the short term, because it promotes inflammation. However, when cytokines react too readily, inflammation can be harmful. Chronic inflammation has been linked to many diseases.
People who are lonely also tend to react more strongly to negative events in their lives. If lonely people experience daily life as more stressful, it may cause chronic stress, which in turn disrupts the immune system.
The study indicates that those who feel close to friends and family can know that their health is likely getting benefits from those relationships. People who feel socially connected are experiencing positive outcomes.

Most people with problems see their problem as limitations to their success. The moment you begin to see your problems as stumbling blocks (絆腳石), you start to have more problems. But the way you see your problems determines how they affect you. If you see your problems as the walls that cannot be broken down, then problems will affect you more than they are supposed to. But if you see your problems as opportunities, then you will be able to solve them and get the message that the problems are passing across to you.
The greatest men always remain calm when they face problems. When they face problems, they remain positive. Staying positive is one of the keys to solving your problems. When used well it could help get you out of difficulty. When you remain positive, you put yourself in the right position to solve your problems effectively.
Problems act as a good teacher and give you something new to learn, and with every lesson comes a solution. You must learn from the problem itself and look for the way forward instead of complaining, worrying and giving excuses. Every problem is just like an examination. Once you solve the problem, you get to the next level.
Not everybody is fit to share your problems with you, and not everybody is fit to know your problems. But you should have someone you can speak to and someone who is always willing to listen to you. You must be able to be accountable to this person and the person must be someone that is better and know much more than you. This person would be able to give you meaningful advice, monitor your progress and also support you.
